Using Color To Affect Your Mood

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could transform every room in our space and still remain on budget? Well designer Vita Anne Burdi, CKBD from DJ’s Home Improvements says you can by using color!

When redecorating, most homeowners look into purchasing a new set of furnishing and accessories to transform the feeling in their space.  Purchasing a new set of furnishings is often a more permanent change and not as easily interchangeable as paint color.

By simply changing the color of your space from a cool to a warm tone this will automatically breathe new life into your room and vice versa!

When to use warm, rich colors:

Warm colors are best when you want to make your room feel cozy. Using a rich and bold accent wall will shorten a long or narrow room. In addition, using dark wood furniture such as espresso, mocha and black tones adds visual weight to your furniture pieces and therefore, makes them stand out as focal point in your room. Some designers, when faced with the challenge of working with very high ceilings, use a dark color or heavy treatment to visually lower the ceiling height.

When to use cool colors:

You often see cool and light colors used when a designer is trying to portray a very airy and calm space. Light wood tones or paint colors with little saturation are used to expand a space. This allows the natural sunlight to reflect rather than be absorbed by a darker tone. When a cool-toned paint color is used with white furniture, your eyes are able to pass through the room with ease and not land on a particular piece of furniture or accessory.

When using color as a paint choice or in your furniture selection, think about the natural energy association each color holds. Evaluate if that association agrees or clashes with your room’s mood.

Preparing Your Home for Winter

The month of November is usually when the winter weather begins to creep in. Your day starts and ends in darkness, while children are sent to school bundled in layers of clothing resembling mini Eskimos. With holiday planning in full swing, homeowners often forget that pre-winter preparation for the home is essential.

Our masterminds in our offices have compiled a simple checklist with coordinating tips to winter-proof your home every year.

What to do:

  1. Seal the leaks
    • The best way to keep the inside of your home warm and toasty is to keep the cold out. Step one is to caulk the inside and outside of your windows. On the outside, seal all edges of the sills with a water-resistant product; while on the inside, use a temporary silicone caulk around all moving parts of the window.  The silicone will break loose and easily in the spring when it’s time to open everything up again. The additional bonus is the silicone won’t damage any paint or varnish.
  2. Replace Air Filters
    • A clean air filter will reduce the amount of dust inside your home as well as reduce the amount of energy it takes for your heater to work. Use a handheld vacuum while the filter is out to get rid of dust and cobwebs that may have accumulated in or around the filter slot
  3. Duct and Cover
    • The ductwork in our homes carries the heat from room to room. Ductwork that’s not well-insulated, disconnected, or dirty impedes air flow and makes your heating system work harder. Check ducts in the attic and basement, vacuum them out, and seal loose connections with a metal-backed tape.
  4. Protect your pipes
    • Like the ductwork in your home, any pipes that carry water need to be insulated from below-freezing temperatures. If you have a crawl space under your home or a basement that’s not insulated, wrap your pipes with fiberglass insulation or use pre-molded foam rubber sleeves that you can pick up at most home improvement stores.
  5. Turn ON the fan
    • Ceiling fans are a great way to help cool your house in the summer, and they come in handy during the winter months too. In preparation for colder weather, reverse the direction of airflow on your fans. Since warm air rises, the fan blades will push the air down and help keep the toastier air in circulation. How do you know if your fan is rotating in the right direction for winter? Here’s the trick — turn your fan on and look up. For winter, your fan’s blades should be moving clockwise.
  6. Let it Shine
    • You don’t have to invest a lot of money to enjoy some of benefits of solar energy. Leverage passive solar power during the day by leaving your curtains and drapes open. Your rooms will soak up the heat and release it at night.

Hurricane Sandy Recovery for Homeowners

We are happy to announce that all staff and employees of DJ’s Home Improvements are safe! Thank you to all those who left lovely voicemails, Facebook comments, emails and keeping us in your thoughts.

We are all very excited to be back at work after two weeks of waiting for power restoration in our offices. And we realize there are many homeowners and businesses who are still suffering the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy.

So in an effort to always be a reliable informational resource we have provided some helpful links and tips to those still affected by the storm.

Restoration

Be weary of contractors who are immediately available to repair your home. During a devastating disaster home-owners are very distraught and become the victims to unreliable contractors. These types of contractors either take your deposit and run or only address the visible damage.

TIP: Use a restoration company. A home restoration company is specifically knowledgeable in the beginning steps of reclaiming your home.  They will evaluate the visible damage and also address the non-visible damage like mold and foundation structure.

TIP: Expect a longer wait time for professional contractors and restoration companies. Remember Sandy has claimed millions of victims, so patience is key to ensure your home is restored in impeccable condition.

Renovations & Remodels – Glass half full perspective

Look at the bright side, now you can get that kitchen you always wanted!

While unexpected disasters are never a happy surprise, remember that you can always transform a negative into a positive. Once your restoration is complete transform your problems areas into a masterpiece by scheduling a consultation for your design and home remodeling needs. Please call us at #516-775-8696 or email contact@djshome.com.

Kitchen Designs for the Active Family!

The kitchen is the main room where family and friends gather, not only because of the delicious aromas that come from this hub of the home but also because of the activities and conversations that flow from this space.

In the past, the kitchen was designed for the designated chef, and typically relegated to a closed-off area of the home, often away from other family members. It was where the cook planned, prepared and cooked all of the meals.

kitchens for the active

Today’s kitchen has become a casual, inviting, friendly place to cook, chat, entertain guests, and share stories. To put it simply, it is a very social area, the focal point of our lives and homes.

To accommodate families who enjoy the social aspect of this room, designers/remodelers like DJ’s Home Improvements can create kitchen designs for the active family.

For many young families, the kitchen is also the heartbeat of the home, so a few essential “ingredients” and extra touches will ensure that it operates smoothly when many little hands are congregating.

For instance, you may want to install cabinet shelves and drawers where each child can place their own things.

In addition, kid-friendly surfaces such as the quartz countertops from Cambria will resist stains and scratches more easily than other materials, keeping maintenance to a minimum. Choosing surfaces with rounded corners as opposed to sharp-edged will help prevent minor accidents.

Whether you are designing a kitchen from the ground up, or just sprucing up the old one and adding new elements, it’s important to plan for ample space for easy traffic flow, especially from the work space where meals are prepared, to the dining areas where meals are enjoyed.

Art To Enhance Your Home

Art is an expression of color and feeling and each person will view it differently, according to his/her likes and dislikes. Artwork decorates your home, bringing out the colors and hues in the walls and décor. When remodeling your home, think about how it will enhance your favorite print, painting, or photograph. As an experienced designer for over 20 years, I can help you incorporate your artwork and treasured photographs into your project.

When exploring the world of art, we come to realize that art forms are as unique as our personalities and characteristics. When remodeling your home, think about how your newly remodeled home and new decor will work with your collection of art and photographs. We can design and present to you CAD drawings of your new home remodel incorporating the artwork you love and cherish, even before your remodeling project begins.

Carefully finding the best location to bring out the best in your art collection, along with good color combinations, will not only be eye-catching, it will bring the focus on the art pieces. A designer will help you create an arrangement of accessories in your home, which can bring out the colors in your decor.

Another thing to consider is how light will play on the artwork in the room, especially if there is a great deal of sunlight. Natural lighting in the morning and the afternoon will make colors appear differently. With a properly planned lighting design, you will find that situating artificial light, such as spotlights, can bring out the colors in your art.

Of course, there is nothing as beautiful as a piece of artwork that you are passionate about, however, you can also affect how a viewer’s eyes are guided toward the art by the choice of matting and frames. With the many choices in matting and frames, your designer will help you choose the best suited for your (grouping of) art.

Many people are in a quandary when it comes time to hang a painting. Most people erroneously believe a painting should be hung at eye level. However, we all come in many different shapes and sizes. If a 6’3” man and a petite woman of 5’1” are looking at the same painting, it might appear to be too low or too high, depending on who is looking at it.

To gauge the correct height of a painting, measure the distance to the furniture below it. A picture should be six to eight inches above a sofa or eight to ten inches above most other furniture. If placed any higher than that, it will seem disengaged from the furniture and put the rest of the room off balance. A well-planned design will show your contractor where to appropriately mount your art.

When hiring a design-build remodeler for your new space remember to mention your most precious art collection and photographs. A design-build remodeler will help you incorporate your treasures into your home remodel to create a completely improved space full of your beautiful art and fond memories.

Do you have a collection of art and/or photographs that need proper framing and display? Is your home decor currently clashing with your art collection? Do your walls feel empty and can’t decide how to decorate?

Contact DJ’s Home Improvements for a design consultation. We can incorporate your collection of art, in its entirety and seamlessly, into your home remodel. # 516-775-8696 or contact@djshome.com

Michael S. Smith “Kitchens and Baths”

I recently went to the Ann Sacks Tile Showroom, in the Gramercy Park area of Manhattan, for the book signing of Michael S. Smith’s newly released book, Kitchens and Baths. It was a little chilly that day and after a drive into the city a nice glass of wine at the showroom was a welcoming touch. Including being a world renowned designer, the interior designer to the Obamas in the White House and author, Michael S. Smith is just the nicest person you could ever meet. If I look and sound like a fan, it’s because I am.

This is a third book by Michael S. Smith. “The newest book from acclaimed designer Michael S. Smith showcases his exceptional take on kitchens and baths, the busiest yet most personal rooms in a home. Legendary designer Michael S. Smith has stories to tell about kitchens and bathrooms – those he has designed himself, and those that inspire him. In this fascinating and inspirational book, Smith, who has his own line of kitchen and bath fixtures for Kohler, explains how these rooms define a house. “

Kitchens and Baths by Michael S. Smith

The book is a great inspiration to me, as a Certified Kitchen Designer and Certified Bath designer. The book is also split into different categories like “Beach”, “Town” and “Country”, each bringing the reader into a different but equally stunning experience. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy at the bookstore or online. Share with me your feeling of inspiration, from Michael S. Smith’s Kitchens and Baths book, to redesign the most utilized and most important rooms in your home.
