From Backyard To Party Space

Summer time is here and that means it’s time to beautify the backyard and get ready for all those weekend BBQ’s. Unless you are blessed with a green thumb or are best friends with your landscaper, your backyard will be in need of some much needed TLC now that winter is over.

Here are some simple tips on get your backyard BBQ and activity-ready:

Every BBQ/outdoor party needs some great entertainment. Now this doesn’t mean it’s time to get the disco ball out of storage but it does mean you need to put your thinking hat on and figure out what kind of entertainment you would enjoy on a regular basis.

If you are not a fan of fire, a koi pond or water feature is another great alternative – think Zen garden in the corner of your backyard. There are also great DIYs all over the internet for backyard games like Twister, Corn Hole, Tic-Tac-Toe, Dominos, Scrabble and even Bowling!

4:  Plants

If you are an avid gardener then your backyard is probably lush with flowers, herbs and colorful shrubs. But if you are limited in space then raised planting beds or plotting vases can be a great way to add life and greenery.

Using plants that are native in your area will ensure your garden is a self-sustaining community. Plus plants will be more adapt to weather extreme weather conditions and climate changes. This means no money wasted on a carful of annuals to renew your plant-life.

So now it’s time to enjoy your backyard, make sure to keep your checklist handy!

Dress Up Your Coffee Table, Nightstand and So Much More…

Dressing up a coffee table or a console table is an opportunity to make a statement which guests can appreciate.  A vignette is a fancy word used to describe the beautiful placement of keepsakes, pictures and architectural pieces on a table top or any flat surface in your home. And once you know the rules, these beautiful pieces of décor are very simple to recreate.

There are 3 main elements to always remember – layers, varying heights, and varying sized objects

This graph demonstrates how simple it is to create a vignette. Using the 3 key elements of layering and gathering objects of various sizes and heights.

Make sure to…

  • Find the perfect place

While the most common placements are console tables, nightstands and coffee tables – in truth, any flat surface will do. Just remember, you are bringing the most treasured pieces of your home together. So placement should be wherever  you can enjoy it the most.

  • Grab your favorite mirror, piece of art or print

Choose this piece carefully. Both the colors and theme of your art piece will be the basis for your vignette and really dominate the composition. A helpful tip would be to choose this piece in coordination to the location of the vignette, the

  • Bring in a tall item

Use a lamp, vase of flowers, thin sculpture or something else (get creative) to give your composition some height.

  • Incorporate a stack of books or a tray

This is again to add some varying height to the vignette. Depending on where you place it, it can also hold smaller accessories (see next step) and even add a little bit of a layered feel to the composition.

  • Add an uneven assortment of smaller accessories

Small boxes, figurines, even candles will do in a pinch. This is really where you add some interest, bring in your personality, or customize for the holidays or themed parties.

  • Review and Edit

Step back from the vignette you’ve just assembled. Eliminate one or two of the small accessories you added (trust us, it’s not impossible to have a good-looking vignette with a lot of elements, but a simpler composition will seem cleaner, feel fresher and look better). Ignore all the previous rules and follow your instincts if you think the vignette needs more accessories, more art or anything else.

If all else fails, look at some pictures of vignettes for inspirations!

Using Color To Affect Your Mood

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could transform every room in our space and still remain on budget? Well designer Vita Anne Burdi, CKBD from DJ’s Home Improvements says you can by using color!

When redecorating, most homeowners look into purchasing a new set of furnishing and accessories to transform the feeling in their space.  Purchasing a new set of furnishings is often a more permanent change and not as easily interchangeable as paint color.

By simply changing the color of your space from a cool to a warm tone this will automatically breathe new life into your room and vice versa!

When to use warm, rich colors:

Warm colors are best when you want to make your room feel cozy. Using a rich and bold accent wall will shorten a long or narrow room. In addition, using dark wood furniture such as espresso, mocha and black tones adds visual weight to your furniture pieces and therefore, makes them stand out as focal point in your room. Some designers, when faced with the challenge of working with very high ceilings, use a dark color or heavy treatment to visually lower the ceiling height.

When to use cool colors:

You often see cool and light colors used when a designer is trying to portray a very airy and calm space. Light wood tones or paint colors with little saturation are used to expand a space. This allows the natural sunlight to reflect rather than be absorbed by a darker tone. When a cool-toned paint color is used with white furniture, your eyes are able to pass through the room with ease and not land on a particular piece of furniture or accessory.

When using color as a paint choice or in your furniture selection, think about the natural energy association each color holds. Evaluate if that association agrees or clashes with your room’s mood.

Kitchen Designs for the Active Family!

The kitchen is the main room where family and friends gather, not only because of the delicious aromas that come from this hub of the home but also because of the activities and conversations that flow from this space.

In the past, the kitchen was designed for the designated chef, and typically relegated to a closed-off area of the home, often away from other family members. It was where the cook planned, prepared and cooked all of the meals.

kitchens for the active

Today’s kitchen has become a casual, inviting, friendly place to cook, chat, entertain guests, and share stories. To put it simply, it is a very social area, the focal point of our lives and homes.

To accommodate families who enjoy the social aspect of this room, designers/remodelers like DJ’s Home Improvements can create kitchen designs for the active family.

For many young families, the kitchen is also the heartbeat of the home, so a few essential “ingredients” and extra touches will ensure that it operates smoothly when many little hands are congregating.

For instance, you may want to install cabinet shelves and drawers where each child can place their own things.

In addition, kid-friendly surfaces such as the quartz countertops from Cambria will resist stains and scratches more easily than other materials, keeping maintenance to a minimum. Choosing surfaces with rounded corners as opposed to sharp-edged will help prevent minor accidents.

Whether you are designing a kitchen from the ground up, or just sprucing up the old one and adding new elements, it’s important to plan for ample space for easy traffic flow, especially from the work space where meals are prepared, to the dining areas where meals are enjoyed.

Striking North Fork Bath Remodels

The North Fork of Long Island is a gem in the Long Island landscape which boasts stunning homes and properties, as well as a great deal of history. In its earliest years of new settlement, the North Fork, from Orient Point and the islands in the east, to Riverhead and Wading River in the west, it was called Southold. The land was ideal due to its broad fields and woodlands.

Today, the North Fork, with its spattering of beautiful homes known for their Old World charm, is visited and enjoyed by many for its wonderful wine vineyards, and the interspersing of towns located near the beautiful Peconic Bay.

I had the opportunity to work with a past client of ours who owns a home in Cutchogue, in the North Fork, and was impressed with their sprawling property, complete with a pretty, well-maintained landscape; it was a lovely, comfortable haven for a family that needed upgrades in two of their baths.

The color scheme in the first bath would feature soft, creamy beige and tan colors, while the second bath was completely different. This cheerful white and periwinkle blue-colored bathroom had a light and airy beach cottage feeling, which is exactly what the homeowner was trying to achieve.

In the larger bath, ceramic wall tiles in creamy colors and a decorative listello border, lent a soothing atmosphere to the entire space. Built-in bleached wood cabinetry with plenty of storage space and a matching double vanity with two sinks, showed the natural hues in the wood. Diagonally-set ceramic floor tiles in a slightly darker color contrasted the cabinetry to perfection.

Custom-built shower shelves, and a corner shower enclosure maximized the space. Soft traditional lighting from well-placed wall sconces gave a certain glow to the room, creating an ambience of tranquility.

One of the most delightful aspects about being a professional designer is seeing that sparkle of happiness on clients’ faces when I help them plan and finally choose a design that enhances their homes and works well within their budgets. Since my husband, Jerry and I opened DJ’s Home Improvements 22 years ago, we have lent our design and home remodeling talents to many satisfied homeowners. It has truly been a pleasure to work with them, time and again, and to help them bring their dreams to fruition! We plan to continue to do this for many years into the future.

Conquering Larsen Syndrome With An Accessible Kitchen

See Emily discussing the challenges of and overcoming her spinal condition in the video below.

After meeting a family affected by Larsen syndrome who expressed a desire for a new kitchen, we learned that a member of the family was wheelchair-bound but had a passion for cooking. As we gained a solid idea of what they were looking for in cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and all the other accessories that would enhance the space, we offered our suggestions and put our plans in motion. The kitchen project would not only be aesthetically pleasing and highly functional, it would also provide for safety and universally accessible throughout.

All the new features added up to making the family extremely happy. Where once it was inconvenient for anyone in a wheelchair to reach appliances, cooktop and counters because they were too high, now every newly installed item was easy to access and there was free range of motion in the kitchen.

Universal Design Kitchen – CAD Proposal of New Kitchen Remodel

The previous kitchen made it impossible to reach into drawers or countertops, find kitchen tools, or remove food from the refrigerator/freezer. Since the completion of the renovation, the family has donned their chefs’ hats many times, and is overjoyed to be cooking together.

Using the new drawers is easy when you can roll right up to them.

Emily, a 19 year-old college student, is thrilled to be spending quality family time with her parents in the kitchen. While a good part of the kitchen design concentrated on meeting her needs, her mother, Ellen, points out that while the new kitchen facilitates Emily, it also helps her out tremendously, as well.

Emily is thrilled to be using their accessible kitchen. Although it’s been nearly a year since it was installed, she explains that it is still new and exciting each time the family works together in the kitchen.

Since the renovation was completed, my own abilities have diminished somewhat and recent bouts with a painful foot condition and acute tendonitis made me thankful that our kitchen is so chair-friendly”, says Ellen. “Even better is that we didn’t have to sacrifice beauty and style for function. Vita and Jerry made sure our kitchen was the most attractive and inviting room of our home.

Utilizing Universal Design standards, we designed a kitchen with quality products and special features that took into consideration the structure and environment that would make our clients feel comfortable, regardless of age, ability or situation.

We enhanced the space by creating a separate accessible section with no barriers between the sink, cooktop, and storage areas. Wheelchair accessible toekicks and a lower-placed wall oven, as well as an induction cooktop, were installed with safety features to prevent injuries. Cabinetry and countertops are steel reinforced and provide five feet of clear space for unobstructed wheelchair access.

Cabinetry and countertops were also installed at a lower height for convenient access. Additional easily-accessible electrical receptacles and switches were placed below the countertops.

New Cooking Skills in A Newly Accessible Kitchen – “I’m so happy to have a place where I can spend quality time with my mother when I come home from college. With her guidance, I’m improving my cooking skills and making food the whole family can enjoy”, says Emily.

DJ’s Home Improvements received a 2012 CotY Regional award as a “Universal Design Project Recognition” from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry for the above-mentioned kitchen renovation using Universal Design principles.
